Many of the paintings I did while a graduate student were simply things I wanted to paint from personal interest or the desire to experiment with media. Many of these became gifts for family or friends, but many were offered for sale. I was surprised at how well things sold, and in fact I financed much of my scientific research with my artwork. The times were something of a Golden Age of wildlife art, driven largely by the limited-edition print craze. When that bubble burst, the best path for me was to work for publishers as an illustrator.
