Existing Art. Recently, my inventory of original artworks has been dwindling because I have been concentrating on my scientific work, and the only artwork I have done has either been related directly to illustrating my own and others’ scientific works or has been for
Handbook of the Birds of the World who retain the originals. Nevertheless, I have a residual inventory of original works, mostly from before 2002, that I have simply made little effort to market because I have been preoccupied. I am now making them available through this website.
All of the paintings and drawings shown are original works, mostly created for publication. Further history and detail appears with the image of some pieces.
Purchasers acquire only the original artwork. Copyright remains property of H. Douglas Pratt.
Works that are framed may be sold unframed at a small discount. The quality of the framing in each case is reflected in the overall price.
Dimensions for framed or matted works are approximate outside measurements; unframed dimensions are approximate mat opening sizes.
Sales tax of 6.75% will be added for sales within North Carolina.
For small pieces, shipping is included in the price. For large works that are difficult to ship, other arrangements and additional cost may be necessary.
All items are subject to prior sale, so please email to ask about availability before sending me any money.
Private commissions. I will gladly create a unique work for you. You may choose the species involved, and suggest what surroundings you have in mind, but beyond that you must allow me full creative leeway. As you can see from the existing sales offers, my prices range from the low hundreds to the low thousands, from small vignette portraits (plain background), to full background close-ups, to birds in landscapes. Many people just prefer to tell me how much they are willing to pay, and then let me create something appropriate to the price. I generally ask for a non-refundable 10% deposit on private commissions. Time for delivery will depend on circumstances (sometimes I am under the gun from publishers, and those deadlines take precedence). If you wish to commission a painting or drawing, please contact me by email at
doug@hdouglaspratt.com first and let me know your price range. I may then want to talk to you directly by phone to negotiate anything from subject matter to possible delivery date.
Prints and reproductions. For prints, note cards, and products other than original paintings and drawings, please
click here. Jim Griggs is a long-time friend and promoter of my work, and a highly skilled producer of giclée prints. His products have the look of original artwork, and are faithful to the originals in every way except for size. Jim also does single-order giclée prints of my larger paintings. Such prints are done “by hand”, one at a time, so are essentially original works of art themselves. Prices reflect the amount of work involved.

This is a painting I did as a learning exercise. I like the idea of the strong shadow crossing the bird. The painting hung in my living room for years, but I eventually gave it to my mother. It reverted to me when she no longer had space for it. It was used as the logo for the American Birding Association’s convention in Louisiana in 2007.
I am offering these paintings, which I consider to be my best work to date, for the first time. I have long thought that I would like them ultimately to be kept together as a set and displayed in some public museum or other venue. I am offering the discounted full set price with that in mind. However, because several individuals have expressed interest in acquiring one or more of the plates, but not the full set, the set price will be available for only a limited time. If you are interested in any of these paintings, but not the whole set, please let me know and I will give you right of first refusal if no one purchases the entire set.
My original intention was for the cover of this book to be a full background painting, but I was overruled by the editorial staff on the grounds that it would be the only full background painting in the book. This was before the days of computer graphics, so I had to paint a white mask to cover some of the background to convert the painting to a vignette style. My mother kept the original painting until recently, but no longer has space for it, so I am offering it for sale.

Pratt painted a total of 67 plates for the first and second editions of this popular field guide. Of the original series, only 3 were never sold or otherwise dispersed. All of them depict birds not well known to North American birders. Now they are being offered to an international audience. Recently, the yellowthroat/chat plate has become available again because the owner no longer has space for it. The image of the Yellow-breasted Chat in a trumpet creeper was the book’s title page logo for nearly 20 years. These original paintings, which are familiar to millions of birders, only rarely come onto the market.
This painting is from the collection of Will Carter of Weslaco, TX, who is moving to smaller quarters and no longer has room for it. He has asked me to sell it for him, and I am happy to assist. It is from a series of American cat paintings I did for the American Masters Corporation of Houston, no longer in business.
